Address Profile Facebook is one of the leading social networks on the Internet. While it was originally targeted toward college students, the site has seen tremendous growth over the last several years by opening up membership to everyone. Facebook has over 250 million active users. More than 120 million users log on to Facebook at least once each day. More than two-thirds of Facebook users are outside of college. About 70% of users are outside of the U.S. according to the company. According to measurement firm Hitwise, Facebook has seen traffic soar 149% in February 2009 compared to the previous year. The site launched in February 2004 and was founded by Mark Zuckerberg and Dustin Moskovitz, who were roommates at Harvard University. The Facebook site quickly became popular and the two dropped out to focus on their venture full-time. Zuckerberg is CEO of the company and Moskovitz is Chief Technology Officer. Facebook generates revenue almost entirely through advertising. In April 2006, the company closed a $25 million round of funding led by Greylock Partners with Meritech Capital Partners, Accel Partners and individual investor Peter Thiel participating. Thiel is a founder of PayPal. Microsoft announced a $240 million investment in October 2008 with Facebook, giving it a then valuation of $15 billion. Microsoft is also selling advertising on Facebook in a deal that runs through 2011. In May 2009, Facebook announced that Digital Sky Technologies (DST), one of the leading internet investment groups globally with significant stakes in Eastern European and Russian internet businesses, had made a $200 million investment in Facebook in exchange for preferred stock, representing a 1.96 percent equity stake at a $10 billion valuation.
