Profile

Netflix is a pioneer in the online movie rental business which it launched in 1999.

Netflix has become the world's largest online DVD rental service with almost 24 million subscribers. Customers receive DVDs by mail from a list they have created online and return the DVDs anytime by first-class mail. Customers can also stream movies and TV shows on their computers, iPads or iPhones along with Nintendo Wii, XBox 360 and Sony PS3 gaming consoles. Not all content is available by streaming.

The company offers a variety of subscription plans, starting at $7.99 a month. There are no due dates, no late fees and no shipping fees. DVDs are delivered for free by the US Postal Service from 42 regional shipping centers located throughout the United States. Netflix can reach more than 90 percent of its subscribers with generally one business-day delivery.

In addition to computers and laptops, viewers can also watch streaming NetFlix movies and shows on their Sony PS3, Wii and XBox 360 videogame boxes along with the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

Netflix was launched on September 23, 1999 from a small warehouse in San Jose. The company only had 2,000 movies to offer. Today it has more than 75,000 titles available.

The company delivered its 100,000th DVD in October 1999, its one millionth the following month and its 100 millionth in May 2003. Over the years, the service's five most frequently rented movies have been, in order, "Crash," "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," "Walk the Line," "Hotel Rwanda," and "Million Dollar Baby."

In February 2007, Netflix reported shipping its one billionth DVD to a subscriber in Helotes, TX. The movie was "Babel" and shipped from Houston.

Netflix has signed deals with major networks and movie studios to provide more access to streaming video for its members.

The company also began offering service to Canada in 2010.

Pricing

Netflix increased prices in July 2011 to include separate subscriptions for streaming video and receiving DVDs.

The unlimited streaming plan will cost $7.99 a month. The price for getting both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs will be $15.98 a month ($7.99 + $7.99).
