Profile

Topix is one of the leading news aggregating sites on the Internet, scanning thousands of news sources continually 24 hours a day.

Topix has developed unique technology to find and categorize news into 300,000 topics that can be searched by zip code. The site generates revenue from advertising.

Topix crawls and categorizes breaking news from over 12,000 media sources and over 38,000 blogs. Topix has separate pages for the 30,000 US cities and towns, 5,500 public company and industry verticals, 48,000 celebrities and musicians, 1,500 sports teams and personalities.

The company was formerly known as Topix.net but purchased the domain Topix.com in 2007 for a reported $1 million. Topix redesigned its site in April 2007 to allow more citizen journalism and user participation.

Topix.net is a privately held company with investment from Gannett Co., Inc., The McClatchy Company and Tribune Company. Topix.net distributes content via partnerships with Citysearch, Ask Jeeves, My Yahoo!, Bloglines, Metro Newspapers, Newsgator, Findory, Wondir, Infospace, Link Silicon Valley, HelloMetro.com and PRWeb.

Gannett and Tribune each own a 33.7% stake in Topix.net, while McClatchy owns an 11.9% stake. The three major newspaper companies invested an additional $15 million in Topix in November.
